Keeping the office clean, safe and pleasant to work in . .it is possibe to carry out these tasks and make a fairly good job at them. However the commercial cleaners have the edge. They just seem to be able to effortlessly glide between rooms, using a routine that just cleans as they glide. I asked our old retainer we had at one office – she isisted the only way was to empty all rubbish bins, ashtrays off desk tops and surfaces into one large dustbin bag; she had a separate cloth and soapy spray to rinse those, until the supplies of bin bags became the norm. Back to the routine, mugs and crockery were taken to the kitchen & put in dishwasher or left to soak in scalding hot suds. Each desk would have it’s hardware gently moved aside or lifted up and a quick dust, then very light spray polish/cleaner – nothing too much as this made the surfaces sticky. The surface would then get a light drying duster and all sparkled. She even did each telephone. Every week the files around each desk were given a cursory vacuum to remove loose dust. Then the carpets and chairs were vacuumed in one go as she moved through the building.
